With links to other pages, some that are general sites, others that are developed by people who seem obsessed with HM or GG, or even TV in general, I would like to conclude this exhibition.

To try and create a perfect exhbition of why people are obsessed with television would take more time, more study and definately more searching through the internet.

I feel that this is a subject that one cannot package away, as television, whether you watch it for news, tv shows, on your computer, on your phone, the obsession with celebrities, anything that relates to television obsession will always have an impact on society.

Obsession with hating the obsessed

Have you ever wondered as to how much time someone spends on saying that they hate all the fans of (insert name here)? If you look at this facebook group it’s quite juvenile, but I guess they have the right to put their opinions forward. It’s as if these people feel personally outraged by Hannah Montana. I found it funny how they make fun of people who are obsessed with Hannah Montana yet they themselves seem obsessed with hating her. Are both groups just following social norms?

What about those people who secretly like it? This is a facebook group which kind of defeats its purpose, if its a secret addiction… why post it where everyone can see that you’re secretly addicted?

Miley Stewart (Miley Cyrus) is the central character, also called Hannah Montana when appearing as a popstar.

Robby Stewart (Billy Ray Cyrus) is Miley’s father.

Jackson Stewart (Jason Earles) is Miley’s older brother.

Lilly Truscott (Emily Osment) is Miley’s best friend.

Oliver Oken (Mitchel Musso) is Miley’s other best friend.

Rico Suave (Moises Arias) is Jackson’s supervisor and sometimes his best friend

The only characters who know Miley’s secret in the show are her family members, Oliver, Lilly, Lilly’s Mom, Jake, Roxy, Officer Diaria and his daughter, and the entire town of Crowley Corners.

Television shows and TV

So… you can watch TV, the actual television set, sit on a couch and eat some pizza. Or you can download a television show, free of advertisements and watch it on your computer or USB it and then connect it to your DVD player and watch TV that way. Is that really TV? What defines TV?

The television show can be watched anywhere, on your phone, your laptop, your ipod etc. But TV… sitting in front of the TV, suffering through the advertisements and waiting until that half hour is up and you have to wait another week for that show, does that still exist?

If you look at this blog by Nick Monacelli: It mentions DTV, Digital TV in Michigan:

First the government is currently spending 1.5 billion dollars to help people pay for the converter boxes to receive the digital signals. Congress made this wise decision at the same time they were cutting funding for Food Stamps by about $700 million in 2005.

Why does the government think everyone needs access to television? Can’t they spend that money on somethign else Such as education funding?

The argument that this is necessary because citizens need to have access to bulletins in case of an emergency is ridiculous. There’s still radios. Radios can be just as effective as conveying emergency information as TVs.

Thought that blog looks at what the Michigan government is doing, isn’t the Australian government doing it as well? Even SBS had more than one channel, focusing on HDTV.

Looking at this website You can view a forum about DTV, HDTV etc. People question which DTV set top should they get, where to get it etc. Is there a mad rush for DTV set tops as the government is initiating and encouraging them to? It’s the future! You need it!

Celebrities – a person who is famously recognized in a society or culture.

Why do people obsess over celebrities? Because they want to be like them? Because they feel that celebrities have a better or a more exciting life then them?

You can see that everyone is questioning this. Yes there are gossip magazines dedicated to celebrity gossip, such as New Idea. Maybe celebrities seem alien like, all the stories about them seem made up and strange creating a barrier between the “normal” people and the celebrities.
When watching a reality show do we, the audience, enjoy watching “real life” people struggle or celebrities?

Why do people drool over pictures of a celebrity walking to the dry cleaners? It’s probably because there’s a seperation between them as the normal person knows the celebrity but they have no idea who this normal person is. The feeling of wanting the people you know to know you as well.

The obsession with television is not new to this digital world.

If you ask someone who was born fifty years ago what their three favourite television shows were you might get the answer “Happy Days, Gilligan’s Island and Bewitched” (or Happy Days – Aye! The Fonz!)

Nowadays it’s: Gossip Girl, Scrubs, How I Met Your Mother, Hannah Montana, Family Guy, House, Greys Anatomy, The Bachelor, Keeping up with the Kardashians and so many, many more.

The idea of television varies, is it reality tv? A sitcom? News? Live to air or recorded? Does it involve ad breaks

With so much downloaded, how many people actually watch television, not just on their computers through files or youtube?

Do people prefer movies over television?
